Background of the Study

Child immunization remains a critical public health priority, particularly in regions with historically low literacy levels among adults. In Mubi North Local Government Area, Adamawa State, adult literacy programs have been introduced with the objective of not only improving basic educational outcomes but also enhancing health-related behaviors, including child immunization. Low literacy among caregivers often translates into limited awareness of immunization schedules, vaccine benefits, and the need for timely health interventions (Usman, 2023). Adult literacy initiatives, therefore, play a dual role by equipping parents and guardians with the necessary skills to access and comprehend health information while fostering a proactive approach to child healthcare.

The relationship between literacy and health outcomes is well documented in recent research. Literacy enables individuals to interpret public health messages accurately, navigate healthcare systems effectively, and overcome misinformation regarding vaccines. In Mubi North, where sporadic outbreaks of preventable diseases have been reported, literacy programs are seen as an essential intervention to bridge the knowledge gap and promote higher immunization rates (Abubakar, 2024). Furthermore, these programs create platforms for community engagement and dialogue, facilitating the dissemination of crucial health information. Through structured adult literacy classes, participants are exposed to health education modules that emphasize the importance of immunization, preventive healthcare, and early disease detection.

Adult literacy not only contributes to personal empowerment but also influences broader community health dynamics. Literate caregivers are more likely to adhere to immunization schedules and advocate for improved health services within their communities. The ripple effects of enhanced literacy are therefore observable in increased child immunization rates, reduced incidences of vaccine-preventable diseases, and overall improvements in public health (Gimba, 2025). As such, investigating the impact of adult literacy on child immunization offers significant insights into the potential for educational interventions to drive public health improvements in resource-constrained settings. This study aims to evaluate the extent to which literacy programs can catalyze positive health behaviors among caregivers in Mubi North, thereby contributing to enhanced child health outcomes and community resilience (Usman, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Despite ongoing efforts to improve child immunization rates in Mubi North, challenges persist due to low levels of adult literacy. Many caregivers lack the requisite skills to comprehend immunization schedules, health advisories, and the scientific rationale behind vaccines, which contributes to delayed or incomplete immunization of children (Suleiman, 2023). This situation is compounded by widespread misinformation and cultural beliefs that further deter parents from adhering to recommended vaccination protocols. Inadequate communication between healthcare providers and low-literate populations has resulted in suboptimal immunization coverage and periodic outbreaks of preventable diseases.

The current literacy programs in the area, while effective in improving basic reading and writing skills, often do not incorporate comprehensive health education components. As a result, there is a disconnect between the acquisition of literacy skills and the practical application of this knowledge in promoting child health. Caregivers may attend literacy classes but remain unaware of the importance of timely immunization due to the lack of integrated health education within these programs (Ibrahim, 2024). Additionally, logistical challenges such as limited access to health facilities and inadequate community outreach further exacerbate the low immunization rates. The combined effect of these challenges results in a persistent gap between literacy improvement and positive health outcomes for children.

Addressing this problem necessitates a multidisciplinary approach that integrates adult literacy education with targeted health interventions. It is imperative to understand how literacy can empower caregivers to make informed health decisions and improve immunization uptake. This study seeks to critically analyze the barriers that impede the translation of literacy into effective health behaviors and to propose strategies for a more holistic approach to adult education in Mubi North, ultimately enhancing child immunization rates (Abubakar, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of adult literacy programs on child immunization rates.

2. To identify barriers that prevent literate caregivers from accessing immunization services.

3. To develop recommendations for integrating health education into adult literacy curricula.

Research Questions

1. How do adult literacy programs affect caregivers’ awareness of immunization schedules?

2. What are the primary barriers that hinder caregivers from ensuring complete child immunization?

3. How can adult literacy programs be improved to better support child health initiatives?

Research Hypotheses

1. H1: Adult literacy programs significantly increase child immunization rates.

2. H2: There is a positive association between caregiver literacy and adherence to immunization schedules.

3. H3: Integrating health education with literacy programs improves child health outcomes.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores the critical link between adult literacy and child health outcomes in Mubi North. By identifying how literacy influences caregivers’ understanding of immunization and health practices, the research will inform strategies to integrate health education into literacy programs. The findings will support policymakers and health practitioners in developing comprehensive interventions that enhance child immunization rates, thereby contributing to improved public health and community resilience (Gimba, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to examining the effect of adult literacy programs on increasing child immunization rates in Mubi North Local Government Area, Adamawa State. It focuses exclusively on the literacy–health nexus within the specified region.

Definitions of Terms

1. Adult Literacy Programs: Educational initiatives aimed at teaching basic reading, writing, and comprehension skills to adults.

2. Child Immunization Rates: The proportion of children who have received the recommended vaccines within the appropriate time frames.

3. Health Education: The process of informing and educating individuals about health practices and preventive measures.
